The Melbourne Editors’ Chase
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Melbourne Editors’ Chase. If you’ve just joined us, the candidates are now in the gates, ready for the off. A late change to mention – Gritted Teeth has been withdrawn from the field.
So, here we go.
The first to make a break is the bookies’ favourite Dipped Head, followed closely by Swallow, Frowned, Deep Breath, Half Smile and the rank outsider, Cheeks Burn. These six are leading the pack with Heat Rising, Pursed Lips and Head Shake taking up the rear.
Dipped Head is leading the field, while Frowned has overtaken Swallow. Heart Racing has separated from the middle grouping and drawn alongside Half Smile.
With a furlong to go, Dipped Head is looking strong. Frowned is followed by Deep Breath, with Swallow dropping back behind Half Smile. Head Shake has pulled up and is being overtaken by Blinked, Eyes Closed, Furrowed Brow and Stern. The stragglers are still Heat Rising, Head Shake and Pursed Lips.
The lead is shortening. Dipped Head is tiring! Deep Breath is coming through to overtake Frowned. Does he have the legs? And from nowhere, Nodded is galloping forward on the outside!
Yes, yes, here comes Nodded. Nodded is going to win by a nose.
First, Nodded. Second, Deep Breath. Third, Dipped Head.
What a race!
